Tonight I went back to my old dance class for the first time in over a year.

This is not the same place that I now attend regularly; it is the place that I originally learned to dance, a proper old fashioned ‘School of Dance’ that, although I have now outgrown, was once one of my favourite places back when I was around 15 and far more agile than I am now.

Because my mum is friends with the teacher, she volunteered me to ‘do a few dances’ in the show, just as she did last year. The difference is now that all of the people my age have now moved on, apart from the assistant teachers who get paid, but because there is only 2 of them now, they need another adult to make up the ‘proper’ dances.

I was not exactly thrilled about being volunteered, but it was a complete blast. It felt like I was home, and I got such a lovely welcome from everyone. My tap technique needs some work (oh how times have changed), but my rhythm and fitness are still there.

I feel alright :)

Finally got round to making a collage of just some of the things that the kids made for me and gave to me during my time with them. This is just a fraction of all of the things, as some of them got a little crushed in my case despite my best efforts to preserve them :(

They are such creative little ones. I am as proud as any former au pair could be :)

For the first time in my life, I am genuinely questioning whether I want to have children. I always thought that I did. But now I’m not so sure.

It’s very strange.

I’ve always loved being around kids, loved babysitting my mum’s friend’s kids, helping my mum out with her work, cooed over baby photos and laughed at the silly stuff they did. Hell, I looked after 3 kids (practically full time) for 8 months.

But now I’m thinking about my career and What I Really Want From Life. I always wanted to eventually settle down and have a big family, seeing myself as some kind of fashionable yet perfect, educated but still working class dream mum. But I’m starting to realise more and more that as a woman, I still can’t have it all. Yes, I want (to some extent) to some day be a mum, but I still want to feel fulfilled, and I’m scared that I’ll never have one without having to sacrifice the other. The older I get, the more I realise that it is never plain sailing for anybody, no matter how good and pure your intentions are. Our expectations never ever match the reality.

But then I remember that I’m 22. I’m way ahead of myself. There’s time for fulfilment yet. I don’t want babies now for sure, and I needn’t fluster myself over it just now. I need to just let the future happen, make the right decisions for me, do my best to be a good person and keep my head above water.
